Interesting Body Mods

What will it mean to be human in an (supposedly) post-human era? Body modification is interesting because it is sometimes presented in the mainstream media as something that makes us less human. But does it really? Doesn't it actually make us more aware of our bodies? How does modification differ from, say, tatooing or piercings?
