Project Descriptions

This is the bulk of your grade so be sure to start early and take some time to think about the key concepts in each:

ART 407 - New Media (Fall 09)
Assignments

As with all projects this term, you will be evaluating your classmates' projects. The evaluation criteria will be decided by the class.

Assignment 1 - Non-Linear (Interactive) Narrative

Your task for this project is to construct a non-linear narrative using the Google image search engine. How exactly you use it is your discretion.

The parameters are few: the story you create should allow a user to take a different path each time they interact with the story. You must use images as the foundation of your story - the central element. The final product does not need to be something digital (if it is, then you are responsible for bringing a laptop to class to present the work) It can be paper-based. Regardless of the construction, others must be able to "read" the story quickly in-class. Text can be used to augment the visual story.

Think about how to make this non-linear and interactive. The key part of the project is figuring out to get someone's path to bifurcate or branch. How does this happen in other media such as boardgames or choose-your-own-adventure books?

At the end of the review session you must provide me with a copy of the project and a 'map' describing how the non-linearity works in your project.

Assignment 2 - Video Worlds

Your task is to create a video that constructs a vivid, self-contained world. The world you create should not be a mere description of someplace that already exists but should instead be someplace novel - someplace that doesn't exist.

The video can be created by whatever means possible and should follow some of the key tenets of ambient video and should not exceed 2 minutes in length. Your video should be stored on CD/DVD/Flash Memory Drive or uploaded to an online video service (YouTube, Vimeo) and instantaneously accessible at the review session.

Assignment 3 - Affective Memories

Take your favorite song and think about why it impacts you the way it does. Your task for this assignment is to produce a media artifact that describes in a very visceral, instantaneously emotive way, the essence of the song and its deeper meaning to you. Your project must, however, be translatable to other people. Please refrain from using imagery that is only relevant to you. Remember: go for the essence of the experience. Think about simplifying the experience: use color, sound, smells, tactile sensations to support this effort.

The piece will be presented without the music initially but the music should be brought (or made accessible) for the review session.

Assignment 4 - Confections

You will be given a dossier of data about the class. Your task will be to construct an affective narrative that begins to explore the provided dataset.  This project is a confection of the three prior projects with the added stipulation that the final product can take any form as long as it is mediated through a piece of digital technology.

This project needs to be accompanied with a substantive written description that explains your motivation and the project's relation to a key notion in one or more of the readings.
