Project 1 - Affective Traces Video

Affective Traces

What is affect? If we consider affect to be an almost pre-cognitive, proprioceptive reaction to a host of stimuli then a challenge would be to design an affective video piece that produces such a reaction in the viewer.

For this project, you are asked to produce a short film (1 ½ minutes max) that engages the viewer via affective means. To begin this project define what you want to impart on the viewer. Will the video make them feel uncomfortable? Will it make them feel warm and happy? What can you impart in a minute? How will you produce those affective qualities?

It is important to avoid symbolic meanings. For instance, you don’t want your viewer to rely too heavily on cultural-defined codes. A video of a wedding does not equal happiness. A warm dog does not universally equal comfort. Smiley face stickers don’t equal joy. If someone has to intellectualize - think to consider the meaning of a symbol - then you’ve failed.

Look at different genres of Hollywood film. How does an action film get us to ‘feel’ what is happening? How does a romantic comedy make us fall in love the protagonists? How does a horror film put us on edge?

Use editing, sound, lighting, the distance of your shots, color, and rhythm to craft your affect trace.

Use whatever means you can to get your video made. Feel free use what ever software application (Moviemaker, iMovie, Final Cut pro, Premiere, Flash, After Effects, etc.)

Upload the final video to youtube (create an account if you don’t have one) and post the web address on Blackboard.
